Permit for Special Trees

Private property trees of 55 inches in circumference, which is equivalent to 17.51 inches in diameter, could require a Special Tree Permit.

Washington DC has a law in place that protects our urban forests and it protects trees within public and private spaces

  • Removing street and other publicly-owned trees without a permit is illegal.
  • Removing a Special Tree without a permit is illegal and could result in hefty fines.

The Urban Forestry Administration is dedicated to protecting and maintaining a healthy urban forest and in order to do that there needs to be notification of work being done in public spaces affecting our public trees.

It is important to know:

  • Planting inappropriate tree species may create an impediment or safety risk to pedestrian and vehicular traffic.
  • Inappropriate pruning done by a non-certified arborist may injure or kill a city tree.

Also, see the Street Tree Permit page.
